Wallace LeRoy Ensley, the son of Lewis H. and Dorothea E. (Duncan) Ensley, was born on May 11, 1932, in Stanton County, Nebraska. He attended country schools and Pilger (Nebraska) schools before moving with his family to the Hancock, Iowa, area. He graduated from Hancock High School in 1950.
Wallace entered the United States Navy on June 11, 1952. On September 11, 1952, he married Delores Mae Bergman in Avoca, Iowa. Following his discharge from the Navy on September 18, 1956, the couple moved to Avoca, where Wallace farmed for the Davis Family Farm for nearly 30 years. He later farmed for himself before retiring in 2002.
A proud life-long farmer, Wallace was an active father who enjoyed his children’s activities. He liked to relax and watch old westerns on TV during the evening. In recent years, Wallace and Delores became residents of Avoca Specialty Care in Avoca.
Wallace L. Ensley died on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. He had reached the age of 86 years, 4 months, and 18 days.
Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Ensley; and one brother, Robert Ensley. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Delores Ensley of Avoca, Iowa; two daughters, Debra (Gary Myers) Ricklefs of Davenport, Iowa, and Cindy Ensley of Avoca, Iowa; one son, Allen (Katherine) Ensley of Altus, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Rachel (Curt) Roe, Jared (Ashley Howard) Ricklefs, Destiny (B.J.) Cummins, and Jamie (Jade) Terbush; six great-grandchildren, Jayden Ricklefs, Skyler Roe, Saige Roe, Cooper Cummins, Cara Cummins, and Crew Cummins; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Jim Boardman officiating. Musicians were Deb Rosenow and Kathy Schumacher. Members of the American Legion Post 240, Shelby, Iowa, served as casket bearers. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa, with military rites provided by the American Legion Post #240.
