Violet Martha Frum, the daughter of Henry and Erna (Schoneich) Schade, was born on May 25, 1921, in rural Minden, Iowa. She graduated from Shelby (Iowa) High School in 1938. On May 24, 1939, Violet married Joseph Net “Joe” Frum in Shelby. The couple lived on a farm near Shelby for five years before moving to Omaha, Nebraska, where they built and managed a trailer park. During that time, Violet also worked at various jobs: as a nurses’ aid, keypunch operator for Northern Natural Gas, at the Omaha Post Office, and as a real estate broker. The couple then moved to Ames, Iowa, where they owned and operated the Silver Saddle Motel for three years. Violet and Joe managed the Stuckey’s Restaurant at the Atlantic, Iowa, exit on Interstate 80 before owning and managing the Denison (Iowa) Dairy Queen for 40 years. The couple retired to Omaha, and in June 2009, became residents of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa.
Violet was a longtime member of First Central Congregational Church in Omaha, Nebraska. She enjoyed gardening, reading, square dancing, and traveling by RV. Violet liked taking cruises with Joe and spending time with the family dog, Lady Bug.
Violet M. Frum died on Monday, January 2, 2012, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 7 months, and 8 days.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe Frum, on December 14, 2011; one son, Jack Frum; one grandson, Douglas Frum; one granddaughter, Brandy Frum; and one brother, Roy Schade. She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Margaret Frum of Omaha, Nebraska; two sons, Steve (Joan) Frum of Shelby, Iowa, and Barry (Phyllis) Frum of Crescent, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, with the Rev. Dr. James Harmon and the Rev. Dr. Scott Jones of the First Central Congregational Church in Omaha, Nebraska, officiating. Shirley Pattee served as the organist. Casket bearers were David Frum, C.J. Frum, Bob Gardiner, George Cary, Jereomy Frum, and Henry Paulsen. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby was in charge of the arrangements.
