Vernon Dale Schnack, the son of Alvin John and Twyla Ella (Kullbom) Schnack, was born on July 18, 1939, southwest of Harlan, Iowa. He graduated from Tennant (Iowa) High School in 1957 and attended Iowa State University for one year. On October 4, 1959, Vernon married Marie Kruse in Council Bluffs, Iowa; the couple divorced in 1971. He married Patricia Plagman in Shelby, Iowa, on June 9, 1972; they were divorced in 2002. Vernon farmed for 32 years on farms located southwest of Harlan before working for Irving F. Jensen Construction. He later worked at Botna Bend Park and the Harlan Community Library before retiring.
Vernon was a past-president of the Shelby County Pork Producers, a former 4-H leader, and a former Harlan Kiwanis member. He was an avid Iowa State and Kansas City Royals fan. Vernon loved to fish and read, and spending time with his children and grandchildren was especially enjoyable for him.
Vernon D. Schanck died on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at his home in Walnut, Iowa, having attained the age of 73 years, 11 months, and 26 days.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and one great-niece, Victoria Schnack. He is survived by three sons, Jeff Schnack of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Jason Schnack (fiancée, Kim Canada) of Walnut, Iowa, and Jonas Schnack of Waverly, Iowa; two daughters, Jean (Scott) Coffin of Searsboro, Iowa, and Jennifer (Brian) Langer of Walnut, Iowa; two brothers, Larry (Carol) Schnack of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Charles (Judy) Schnack of Panora, Iowa; one sister, Charlene (Judd) Freeman of Silverthorne, Colorado; 13 grandchildren, Daniel Schnack, Jeremy Schnack, Morgan Schnack, Kelly Sevcik, Katy Sevcik, Kristy Sevcik, Brady Canada, Bella Canada, Caden Schnack, Chace Schnack, Carson Schnack, Brody Langer, and Ella Langer; one great-grandchild, Aubree Schnack; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Lewis of Peace United Church of Christ, Walnut, Iowa, officiating. Casket bearers were Dale Klindt, Dean Klindt, Lon Freeman, Mark Schnack, Kevin Schnack, and Charles Schnack. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa.
