Timothy Joseph Gross was born on December 16, 1949, the son of Leonard and Marie Katherine (Kaufman) Gross in Des Moines, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling. Tim received his education from St. Joseph Catholic School until the 11th grade and graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1968.
On August 29, 1970, Tim married Pat Smith at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling. The couple made their home on the farm north of Earling and raised four children. Tim’s life as a farmer extended beyond row crops and livestock in his early years. He also ran a successful custom farming business, Professional Farm Services, where he provided valuable services to other farmers in the community. His work in both his own fields and through his business left a lasting impact on the local farming industry.
Tim was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a pillar of the AA community, where he celebrated 43 years of sobriety, with his 44th anniversary coming up on March 20. Throughout his journey, Tim made a lasting impact by sponsoring others, leading meetings, and sharing his own story by offering guidance and support to countless individuals. His true passions were farming and his love for all things John Deere. In recent years, Tim took great joy in refurbishing his classic tractors and proudly driving them in parades. Although he retired from farming last fall, Tim remained active by helping his sons on the farm and spending time in his cherished shed. Above all, Tim’s love for Pat was endless and the life they made together. Tim was incredibly proud of his family and treasured the moments spent sharing laughter and meals with his children, grandchildren, and close friends.
Tim passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at his home in Earling at the age of 75 years, two months and one day. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Steven.
Tim is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Pat Gross of Earling; children: Kevin Gross of Earling, JeAnna (Michael) Karloff of Omaha, Jeff (Becky) Gross of Earling and Denny (Jeana) Gross of Harlan; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Tec (Terry) Bieker of Des Moines; and many other relatives and friends.
