Sam Richard Weigel, the son of Lloyd and Mary (Gilson) Weigel, was born on February 8, 1947, in Jefferson, Iowa. He grew up in Guthrie Center, Iowa, and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1965. Sam attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He served six years in the Army National Guard. On July 30, 1972, Sam married Rozan Margaret Goos at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Treynor, Iowa. The couple made their home in Harlan, Iowa, where Sam taught Social Studies and History in the Harlan Community School System for 34 years.
Sam was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church; he had served on the congregation’s Board of Education and sang in the church choir for many years. He was a humble and dependable man who enjoyed many hobbies. He especially liked doing furniture woodworking and stained glass work. He was a true handyman who took care of many repairs for family and friends. The summer cabin on Long Lake, near Park Rapids, Minnesota, was special to him. He loved to spend time fishing, playing golf, eating out, and visiting with friends.
Sam Richard Weigel died on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having reached the age of 66 years, 1 month, and 14 days.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Lester Weigel, Lyle Weigel, and Donald Weigel. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rozan Weigel of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Erica (Larry, Jr.) Allison of Omaha, Nebraska; one son, Alex Weigel of Overland Park, Kansas; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as the organist, and Lee Nelson was the soloist. Casket bearers were Larry Allison, Jr., Jon Burmeister, Larry Johnson, Jim Johnston, Dick Kluver, and Alex Weigel. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
