Roy Jesse Jacobsen, the son of Henry Chris and Rebecca A. (Minick) Jacobsen, was born on February 4, 1926, in rural Hancock, Iowa. He attended country school near Hancock and graduated from Hancock High School in 1943. Roy was a United States Navy Seabee from 1944-46; he returned to Hancock after his discharge from the service. In 1955, he moved to the Denver, Colorado, area where he worked in civil service until retirement. Due to poor health, in 1996, he returned to the Avoca/Hancock, Iowa, area. In recent years, Roy had been a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca.
Roy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. He was a former member of the American Legion in Avoca. Roy had a mind of his own and enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball.
Roy J. Jacobsen died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, 6 months, and 22 days.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, and one infant sister. He is survived by two sisters, Hazel Miller and Hervetta Ronnfeldt, both of Hancock, Iowa; one brother, Robert Jacobsen of McAllen, Texas; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Graveside services and burial were held on Saturday, September 5, 2009, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa, with Chaplain Tom Williamson of Asera Care Hospice officiating.
