Robert Emil Stuhr, the son of Emil W. and Emma C. (Pieper) Stuhr, was born on October 2, 1923, south of Minden, Iowa. He was one of 11 graduates from Tennant (Iowa) High School in 1941. Following a brief time attending Junior College in California, Bob entered the United States Navy, training as a Navy pilot and serving in World War II.
On June 5, 1949, Bob married Betty Maxine Jacobsen in Silver Creek, Nebraska. He began farming and was then recalled into the Service during the Korean Conflict. After his return, he continued farming until his retirement in 2009. He also did part-time television repair at his “Countryside TV”.
Bob was a member of the Shelby United Methodist Church in Shelby, Iowa. He was a past member of the 8-Ball Flying Club of Harlan, Iowa. Bob was a Ham radio operator, and was a member of the ARRL American Radio Relay League; his call letters were WØDJN. He enjoyed building and flying model planes, reading (especially history and astronomy), and he liked traveling with his family.
Robert “Bob” E. Stuhr died on Monday, August 10, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having reached the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 8 days.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother; and one sister, Elizabeth Booth. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Stuhr of Shelby, Iowa; three daughters, Linda (Dix) Scranton of Norfolk, Nebraska, Merry Jo Stuhr of Gray, Maine, and Nancy (Don) Foringer of Edmond, Oklahoma; one son, Richard (Kae) Stuhr of Shelby, Iowa; six grandchildren; five step-grandsons; and other relatives and friends.
The memorial service was held on Friday, August 14, 2015, at the Shelby United Methodist Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Carolyn Hollar officiating. Shirley Pattee served as the organist, and Reva Jean Drake was the soloist. Honorary urn bearers were Bob’s loving grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Military rites were conducted by the Shelby American Legion Post #240, and ashes were buried in the Minden Cemetery, Minden, Iowa.
