Richard “Ric” Clarence Schneider, the son of Walter George and Doris Susan (Finken) Schneider, was born on June 11, 1951, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended St. Boniface Catholic School, Westphalia, Iowa, and Harlan Public Schools, Harlan, Iowa; he later earned his GED. On June 9, 1973, Ric married Janet Kay Lee at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Ric was employed as an automotive mechanic at Harlan Auto Mart for 18 years before working for eight years as a welder in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Most recently, Ric had worked on the production floor of the Shelby County Cookers bacon plant. Due to disability, he retired in 2012.
Ric was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, and also had attended worship services with his family at Altamont Baptist Church in rural Shelby County, Iowa. When younger, he enjoyed bowling and playing softball; he later took up golf and continued to play for many years. Ric liked to mow lawns and raise tomatoes. Time spent visiting with friends and family over a beer was special to Ric, and they appreciated his ability to fix tires. Recently, he had the joy and privilege of serving as his young granddaughter’s full time babysitter.
Richard “Ric” C. Schneider died on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. He had reached the age of 66 years, 4 months, and 21 days.
Ric was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Russ Schneider; and one sister, Jane Foxhoven. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janet Schneider of Avoca, Iowa; two sons, Jeremy (Wendy) Schneider of Exira, Iowa, and Jason Schneider of Tennant, Iowa; two daughters, Jennifer (Daniel) Smith of Harlan, Iowa, and Jill (Steve) Good of Shelby, Iowa; three brothers, Ken (Kim) Schneider of Portsmouth, Iowa, Jerome “Buzz” (Connie) Schneider of Westphalia, Iowa; and Allen (Sue) Schneider of Harlan, Iowa; five sisters, Mary (Gary) Fitzgerald of Clare, Iowa, Denise (Mark) Andries of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jeanie (Ken) Friesen of Crescent, Iowa, Sandy (John) Busch of Defiance, Iowa, and Pam (George) Gingrich of Greenwood, South Carolina; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, with Father David Smith, S.J., celebrating. Curt Zimmerman and the St. Boniface Choir served as the musicians. Casket bearers were Andy Schneider, Ryan Lee, Doug Schneider, Mike Schneider, Barry Schneider, and Brian Schneider. Burial was in the Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery in Rural Shelby County, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
