Omer Scheffler, the son of Henry and Hilda (Haas) Scheffler, was born on March 13, 1913, in Minden Iowa. He attended country schools, and later, Shelby, Iowa, schools through the eighth grade. Omer then began farming with his father near Tennant, Iowa. On January 17, 1937, Omer married Ruth Elizabeth Krantz in Carroll, Iowa. The couple farmed a number of farms in Shelby and Harrison Counties until Omer retired. Following retirement from farming, he worked for Rasmussen Auto Parts.
Omer enjoyed spending time in his shop, and especially liked restoring old Farmall tractors and helping family members work on their cars. He was a talented horse trainer. Omer loved his family, and liked to fish, hunt, collect guns, and spend time at his Lake View cabin.
Omer Scheffler died on Monday, October 15, 2012, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 99 years, 7 months, and 2 days.
Omer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth, on October 12, 1991; one brother, Wayne “Babe” Scheffler; three sisters, Iona Lorenzen, Thelma Dent, and Yvonne Overton; one son, Joe Scheffler; two grandchildren, James Scheffler and Tyrone Scheffler, Jr.; and one great-granddaughter, Kadie Scheffler. He is survived by three sons, Tyrone (Sandy) Scheffler of Portsmouth, Iowa, and Henry (Judy) Scheffler and Jack (Linda) Scheffler, all of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Crystal (Jim) Boardman of Portsmouth, Iowa; one sister, Twyla (Marvin) Sorensen of Arvada, Colorado; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Friday, October 19, 2012, at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Boardman officiating. Helen Warren and Brittnee Boardman served as musicians. Casket bearers were Bill Scheffler, Kale Scheffler, Mike Scheffler, Joe Scheffler, Curt Scheffler, Tom Scheffler, Clint Scheffler, Steve Boardman, John Scheffler, Wayne Boardman, and Mark Boardman. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at burmeisterjohannsen.com.
