Neoma Jean Anderson, the daughter of Elmer B. and Christina (Petersen) Anderson, was born on August 11, 1923 in Monroe Township, rural Walnut, Iowa. She attended school at Monroe #6 country school through the eighth grade, and graduated from Walnut High School in 1942. Neoma helped on the family farm until 1948, and in 1949, she moved to Harlan, Iowa. In the 1950s, she worked in housekeeping at the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan. She also did house cleaning for a short time, and worked at the Harlan Bowling Alley for four years. Following her mother’s death, Neoma cared for her father.
Neoma was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan for over 55 years. She was also a longtime member of the Zenobia Rebekah Lodge #286 in Harlan. Neoma’s hobbies included sewing and refinishing some of her antique furniture.
Neoma J. Anderson died on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. She had reached the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 14 days.
Neoma was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Ralph Anderson and Floyd Anderson. She is survived by six nieces, Beverly (Ernie) Madison of Omaha, Nebraska, Vivian (Jim) Storjohann of Walnut, Iowa, Sheryl Matzen of Blair, Nebraska, Gaynelle (Mervin) Bartell of Holton, Kansas, Twila Patterson of Bakersfield, California, and Gena (Jim) Anderson of Burlington, Washington; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Darwin Moore of the First United Methodist Church, Harlan, officiating. Neoma’s loving family and friends served as casket bearers. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
