Myrna Mae Nelsen, the daughter of Rhinhardt and Hilda (Rock) Krummel, was born on January 31, 1937, in rural Avoca, Iowa. She attended Pleasant #7 country school and graduated from Avoca High School in 1955. Myrna played the clarinet in the High School band. After graduation, she worked at Mutual of Omaha for a time. On May 25, 1958, Myrna married Melvin Glen Nelsen at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. The couple farmed northwest of Shelby, Iowa, and in 1967, purchased their present farm place, located south of Shelby. Myrna had worked at Carley Drug in Avoca for many years.

Myrna was an active member of United Lutheran Church, where she had taught Sunday School for several years. She was a member of the Shelby American Legion Post #240 Auxiliary, the Card Club, and had been a 4-H leader and a member of the Band Parents Organization. Myrna enjoyed cooking and was known for her baking. She had a great sense of humor, and liked listening and dancing to polka music. Myrna loved angel pins. She attended school and sporting events, encouraging her children and grandchildren. A kind, caring, and loving individual, she was devoted and giving toward her family and friends, always thinking of them before herself, because they were very important to her.

Myrna M. Nelsen died on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at Jennie Edmondson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having reached the age of 76 years, 11 months, and 26 days.

Myrna was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Willis Krummel. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Melvin Nelsen of Shelby, Iowa; one daughter, Rhonda Nelsen of Omaha, Nebraska; two sons, Steve (Kerry) Nelsen of Kansas City, Missouri, and Dan (Lynette) Nelsen of Walnut, Iowa; one brother, Delbert (Delores) Krummel of Hancock, Iowa; two sisters, Bonnie Kardell of Avoca, Iowa, and Shirley Fritz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister-in-law, JoAnn Krummel of Avoca, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends.

The funeral service was held on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Nancy Armstrong and Bonnie Peters served as musicians. Casket bearers were Sidney Nelsen, Dane Nelsen, Dakota Nelsen, Michael Nelsen, Kyley Nelsen, Meghan Nelsen, Carissa Holloway, Dustin Nelsen, and Joshua Brammann. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
