Mildred “Millie” LaVon Rosenow, the daughter of Elmer W. and Lucille W. (Emmons) Kiesel, was born on April 14, 1939, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She attended Shelby schools and graduated from Shelby High School in 1958. On August 26, 1960, Millie married Kenneth “Nick” Elmer Rosenow at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby. The couple lived in Shelby where Millie worked several parttime jobs, including working with Nick as a custodian for the Shelby schools. “Grandma Millie” also provided child care for many area children. Millie had recently become a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa
Millie was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Shelby. She enjoyed camping, canning Nick’s garden produce, and attending garage sales with Nick. Millie loved spending time with friends, often meeting over coffee at the Cornstalk Restaurant in Shelby. She had also attended the Shelby Senior Citizen Club in recent years.
Millie L. Rosenow died on Monday, April 7, 2014, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 24 days.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nick Rosenow, on May 18, 2009; and one brother, Don Kiesel. She is survived by one daughter, LaVonne (Dan) Robinson of Shelby, Iowa; one son, Rod (Deb) Rosenow of Shelby, Iowa; four brothers, Doug (Betty) Kiesel, Darrell (Sharon) Kiesel, and Ron Kiesel, all of Shelby, Iowa, and Merle (Jean) Kiesel of Custer, South Dakota; one sister, Bev Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Nancy Armstrong was the organist and Deb Rosenow, Kathy Schumacher, and Sandi Wilds were the vocalists. Casket bearers were Seth Enke, Katie Enke, Nikki Pauley, Dan Nelson, Wesley Grile, Andrea Grile, Clint Robinson, Nick Rosenow, Amanda Brenneis, and Mallory Nelson. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
