Mildred “Joy” Sievers, the daughter of Albert R. and Lillian M. (Longnecker) Kevan, was born on July 17, 1914, in rural Walnut, Iowa. She graduated from Walnut High School in 1932. On April 6, 1934, Joy married Leonard Lloyd “Lynn” Sievers in Tarkio, Missouri. For many years, the couple farmed north of Walnut. Following Lynn’s death on May 6, 1982, Joy remained on the farm; she moved to Peace Haven in Walnut in 2007. In December 2011, Joy became a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa

Joy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa, and when younger, was active in congregation activities. From a young age, she loved living in the country, and she was active in the farm operations and raised shorthorn cattle. Joy and Lynn enjoyed dancing and their Saturday trips into Walnut. She also liked Hershey’s Milk Chocolate with Almonds bars and strawberry malts.

Joy Sievers died on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, at the age of 99 years, 3 months, and 3 days.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leonard “Lynn” Sievers. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Arlene Sievers, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa, with Rev. David Krueger officiating. Diane Book served as the organist. Casket bearers were Allan Sievers, Jim Sievers, Roger Sievers, Doug Sievers, Duane Nielsen, and Wayne Sievers. Burial was in the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
