Melvin Keith Dinesen, son of Leonard Keith and Effie Jane (Terrell) Dinesen, was born on December 15, 1941, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended Kirkman (Iowa) grade school and graduated from Harlan High School in 1960. As a member of the United States Army, Melvin served a military tour of duty in Germany from 1963-65.
On August 27, 1966, Melvin married Janis Loraine Havick at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. The couple began farming northeast of Harlan; in 2014, their farm was designated as a Century Farm.
Melvin was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. He enjoyed feeding and watching birds and other wildlife around the farm. Melvin was an avid Harlan Cyclone football and basketball fan. He collected old hand tools and loved to attend the Greenridge Antique Show. Melvin was partial to Chevy automobiles and International Harvester equipment.
Melvin K. Dinesen died on Friday, November 27, 2015, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He had reached the age of 73 years, 11 months, and 12 days.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Nancy Boos; and one brother, Donald Dinesen. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janis Dinesen of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Amy (Robert) Heflin of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Jason (Tracy) Dinesen of Indianola, Iowa; two sisters, Peggy Hess and Susan (Jerry) Lambert, both of Harlan, Iowa; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Darwin Moore officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz was the organist. Honorary casket bearers were Doug Nelson, Scott Larsen, James Burmeister, Ron Ronfeldt, LaVon Christensen, and Gary Jorgensen. Active casket bearers were Ben Boos, Joel Havick, Nick Boos, Jamie Hess, Brian Lambert, and Matt Heflin. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa.
