Marlene Mae Hansen, the daughter of Mads C. and Marjorie J. (Hopkins) Petersen, was born on September 17, 1940, in Harlan, Iowa. She attended Polk #7 country school and then graduated from Irwin (Iowa) High School. In 1959, Marlene moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she attended Grandview College and Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing, and earned her Registered Nursing degree.
On September 2, 1962, Marlene married LaVerne Harold Hansen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Following her marriage, she worked for a number of years as a registered nurse at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. When her father-in-law died, Marlene joined LaVerne in owning and operating Jacksonville Hardware for many years.
Marlene was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. She was an active mother who enjoyed keeping a vegetable and flower garden, canning, sewing, and doing crafts. She was greatly interested in Jacksonville community and family histories.
Marlene M. Hansen died on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. She had reached the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 2 days.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LaVerne Harold Hansen, on October 7, 2005; and one sister, Marlys Larsen. She is lovingly remembered by one son, Layne (Kristy) Hansen of Jacksonville, Iowa; two daughters, Lisa (Gordon) Frank of Elkhorn, Nebraska, and Libby (Bill) Shelton of Minden, Iowa; one sister, Marilee (David L.) Christensen of Harlan, Iowa; one brother, Mark (Shirlyn) Petersen of Kimballton, Iowa; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Pastor Loren Christensen of Brayton Lutheran Church, Brayton, Iowa, officiated. Serving as the musician was Dianne Book. Casket bearers were Connor Frank, Tony Hansen, Ben Hansen, Michael Shelton, and Samantha Shelton. Burial was in the Jacksonville Cemetery, Jacksonville, Iowa.
