Marilyn Jean Schnack, daughter of Willfred Edward and Lola Mae (Drager) Herring, was born on October 31, 1940, in Atlantic, Iowa. She attended Cumberland, Iowa, schools, where she played basketball. Following her high school graduation in 1958, Marilyn moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where she worked several years as a secretary for Mutual of Omaha. On July 25, 1959, Marilyn married Thomas Anstey; they became the parents of two sons. The couple lived in California while Thomas was in the Service. They then returned to Iowa, living in Cumberland, and later, Fort Dodge.

Thomas and Marilyn divorced in 1984. On June 4, 1988, Marilyn married Gail Earle Schnack at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. Marilyn worked as a bookkeeper for Harlan Manufacturing and Harlan Builders for many years; she retired in July 2013.

Marilyn was a long-time member of the Harlan Golf and Country Club in Harlan. She enjoyed traveling south for the winter, golfing, and playing Bingo. Time with family was precious to Marilyn; she especially loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marilyn J. Schnack died on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at the Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona, at the age of 74 years, 2 months, and 8 days.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Betty Ranney; two brothers, Richard Westman and Bradley Westman; and one daughter-in-law, Pamela Anstey. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Gail Schnack of Harlan, Iowa; two sons, Todd Anstey of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and Curt Anstey of Audubon, Iowa; two step-daughters, Kathleen Stanton of Des Moines, Iowa, and Sherrie Schnack of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one step-son, David Schnack of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one sister, Mary Lou Hamilius of Omaha, Nebraska; three brothers, James Westman and Robert Westman, both of Bullhead City, Arizona, and Dennis (Robbie) Westman of Brea, California; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Phillip Nielsen of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Harlan, officiating. Private placement of ashes will be held at a later date in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
