Marie Kathrine Nielsen passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, at the age of 78 years, 1 month, and 2 days.
Marie was born to Peter Christian and Clara Marie (Christensen) Jensen on November 3, 1936 in Atlantic, Iowa. She graduated from Exira (Iowa) High School in 1955 and attended Dana College at Blair, Nebraska. Marie worked in Omaha for several years. She met her husband, Don Morris Nielsen, there and they were married June 14, 1959 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic. They are parents of three children.
Marie and Don lived in Omaha until they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1969 where they lived for 21 years. While in St. Louis, Marie worked as bookkeeper for a school district office. In 1990, Don was transferred to Haughton, Louisiana, and upon retirement they moved to Atlantic.
Marie was always active in the churches she attended. She was both honored and blest by being given the opportunity to lead a class in the Bible Study Fellowship International chapter that met in a large church in Louisiana. She was an active member of the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary until her illness. She enjoyed her Wednesday morning Bible Study group as well as gardening, reading and baking. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Don; son Phillip Nielsen and his wife, DeAnn, and their children, Eric, Isaac, Reece, Sheila and Keisha Nielsen of Kirkman, Iowa, and Jessie of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; daughter Laura Kelly, her husband, Dan Dean of Winslow, Arkansas, and their son Quinn Kelly of Ithaca, New York; son Mark Nielsen, his wife, Amy, and their children Holly and Macy Nielsen of St. Louis, Missouri; brother, Kenneth Jensen and his wife, Bonnie of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and their children Paul Jensen of Cresco, Iowa, and Kari Weise of San Diego, California; as well as other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. Pastor Paul Breddin will officiate and Linda Weaver will serve as pianist. Memorials are suggested to Bible Study Fellowship International, Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp, World Vision, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
