Margaret Katherine Norman, the daughter of Clifton and Lillian (Kirk) Pollock, was born on July 1, 1921, in rural Atlantic, Iowa. She grew up on a farmstead between Atlantic and Wiota, Iowa. After completing her formal training at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), Margaret taught school at a one-room country school down the road from her home. She married Howard Melvin Norman on May 20, 1945, in Atlantic. The couple settled on a farm in near Portsmouth, Iowa, in Harrison County, where Margaret worked alongside her husband in the daily operation of the farm. Howard died on October 15, 1997, in Portsmouth, and Margaret moved to Harlan, Iowa, in 1998.
Margaret was a member of Christ’s Church in Harlan. She was active in the Democratic Party, the Farm Bureau, and the Historical Societies of both Harrison and Shelby counties. Margaret was interested in history and had volunteered as a tour guide at the Harrison County Museum. She was an avid reader and a devoted Christian who loved her Lord.
Margaret K. Norman died on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 91 years, 1 month, and 14 days.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Malcom Pollock. She is survived by one son, Kirk Norman of Ida Grove, Iowa; one grandson, Kevin (Katherine) Norman of Lincoln, Nebraska; one granddaughter, Carolyn (Jon) Henrichs of Bellevue, Nebraska; two great-granddaughters, Ryan Alizabeth Doner and Hannah Kay Norman; one great-grandson, Joseph Kevin Norman; many nieces and nephews and their families; other relatives; and many loving and caring friends.
The funeral service was held at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home, Harlan, Iowa, on Saturday, August 18, 2012, with Pastor Brian Taylor of Christ’s Church, Harlan, presiding. The committal service and burial was held in the Logan Cemetery, Logan, Iowa. Casket bearers were Bruce Bruck, Jon Henrichs, Ed Logan, Jack Wagner, Mike Cain, Kevin Norman, and Dan Copeland.
