Lotus Lavonne Martin, daughter of Fred and Edna (Dobernecker) Meier, was born on August 20, 1932, in Persia, Iowa. She graduated from Persia High School in 1950. On October 22, 1950, Lotus married Marion Francis Martin at the Presbyterian Church in Avoca, Iowa.

Lotus worked at the grocery store in Avoca for a short time before becoming head cook at the Chicken Hut Restaurant in Harlan, Iowa; she held this position for 20 years. In 1971, Lotus and Marion started Martin Electric, where she served as an owner and the bookkeeper. In 1980, she opened a ceramic shop, and Marion helped her in this business. After her retirement, Lotus enjoyed planting flowers, quilting, and baking. Time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was quite special to her.

Lotus L. Martin died on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. She had reached the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 9 days.

Lotus was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marion Francis Martin, on February 11, 2017; one son, Micheal Martin; two brothers, Fred Meier and Ronald Meier; and three sisters, Lavonne Springman and two infant sisters. She is survived by one son, Rick (Roxanne) Martin of Harlan, Iowa; two sisters, Rogena Schmidt of Avoca, Iowa, and Deanna (Marvin) Huebner of Persia, Iowa; two brothers, Robert (Janet) Meier of Irwin, Iowa, and Richard (Kathy) Meier of Tabor, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Karla Martin of Harlan, Iowa; five grandchildren, Maxwell Martin of Walnut, Iowa, Carl Martin, Bobbie Jo Cruise, and Brian Martin, all of Harlan, Iowa, and Becky Martin of Avoca, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Friday, April 7, 2017, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Phillip Nielsen of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Harlan, Iowa, officiating. Pastor Nielsen also served as soloist. Burial of ashes will be held in the Harlan Cemetery at a later date. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
