Lillian Christensen

d. December 7, 2007

Surrounded by love from her family, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend went to rest for eternity in the loving arms of her Heavenly Father at the age of 92 on December 7, 2007, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA, after a heroic battle with Ovarian Cancer.

Lillian was born in Clarkson, NE, on October 21, 1915, to Vaclav and Rose Smrkovsky. She was the second of seven siblings. She graduated from Clarkson High School in 1934. As a young adult, Lillian worked in various garment factory businesses including making tents for World War II.

Lillian was united in marriage to Roy L. Christensen on January 23, 1946, in Papillion, NE. A union of 53 years, the Lord blessed them with two daughters. She assisted her husband in farming, gardening, and companionship. She enjoyed collecting recipes, cooking, baking, and watching game shows, Lillian lived by two golden rules: 1. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and 2. God helps those who help themselves. Lillian had the knack of always figuring out anything that was placed in front of her.

After Roy’s death, Lillian created the Roy and Lillian Christensen Scholarship for Harlan High School in Harlan, IA, for agricultural education.

Preceding Lillian in death were her parents, four brothers and one sister. Survivors include her daughters, Arlene Christensen of Altoona, IA, Mary Jean (Kevin) Sowell of Kansas City, MO, one sister, Rose Totten of Olney, IL, two grandchildren, Mary Ann (Victor H.) Pecina, and Eric (Jennifer) South, both of Kansas City, two great-grandchildren, Lorenzo and Victor S. Pecina of Kansas City, nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be remembered fondly in our hearts and memories.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, IA, with Pastor Steve Chellew of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan officiating. Lee Nelson was the soloist, and family and friends served as casket bearers. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery. Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.
