Lester Edwin Hass, the son of Julius Valentine and Lena (Clausen) Hass, was born on March 25, 1926, in rural Manning, Iowa. He attended country school through the eighth grade. At an early age, Lester began farming with his father; after his father’s death at age 51, he continued to work the same land.
Lester met Viola Mae Steckelberg at a dance hall in Denison, Iowa, and the couple married on October 27, 1946, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. They spent over 50 years farming together, first briefly near Aspinwall, Iowa, then 17 years near Irwin, Iowa, and finally, 33 years south of Manilla, Iowa. They retired to Harlan, Iowa, in 1992. Most recently, Lester had made his home at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, Iowa.
Lester was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. A hard-working man, he often recalled milking cows by hand in the early days of his farming career. Lester and Viola loved to dance, and they continued this activity well into their life together.
Lester E. Hass died on Friday, December 10, 2021, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. He had reached the age of 95 years, 8 months, and 15 days.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola Hass, on September 4, 2016, in Manilla, Iowa; two sisters, LaVerne Schmidt and Helen Schuldt; and four brothers, Hank Hass, Melvin Hass, Marvin Hass, and Merlin Hass. He is survived by one daughter, Linda (Jim) Fisher of Dayton, Texas; four grandchildren, Amber Roth, Mandy Edwards, Eric Edwards, and Scott Edwards; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Friday, December 17, 2021, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Phillip Nielsen officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as the musician. Honorary casket bearers were Danny Hass, Jim Fisher, Eric Edwards, and Scott Edwards.
