Leon Willis Hansen, the son of Hans T. and Bertha V. (Jacobsen) Hansen, was born on November 18, 1937, in rural Kimballton, Iowa. He was raised and lived most of his life in Jackson Township, and attended Jackson #6 country school through the eighth grade. For a short time, he worked for Norman Hansen in his Jacksonville (Iowa) repair shop, and then for the Pontiac dealership in Exira, Iowa. In November 1960, Leon entered the United States Army. Upon his return from the service, he became a mechanic at the E.M. Christensen dealership in Harlan, Iowa. In 1966, Leon started D & L Body Shop with his brother, Dennis. Leon remained active in the business after the name changed to D & L Auto Salvage.
On April 12, 1969, Leon married Cheryl Ann Christensen at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa.
Leon was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. In 1971, he became a member of the AMVETS in Kimballton, where he was a past commander. Leon enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, Minnesota, and South Dakota, and he also hunted locally. Time spent with family and friends was important to him. Leon and his brothers also liked to speak their native Danish language.
Leon W. Hansen died on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having reached the age of 75 years, 8 months, and 27 days.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Galen Hansen, Eugene Hansen, Dennis Hansen, and an infant brother. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cheryl Hansen of Harlan, Iowa; two sons, Dale (Gina) Hansen and Dan (Brenda) Hansen, both of Kimballton, Iowa; one brother, Jerry (Sherry) Hansen of Harlan, Iowa; four grandchildren, Nichelle Hansen, Evan Hansen, Justin Hansen, and Kyle Hansen; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Monday, August 19, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa, with Sam Jacobs and Pastor Keith Menter officiating. Sherry Hansen served as the organist, and Pastor Keith Menter was the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were Justin Hansen, Jerry Hansen, Kyle Hansen, Jerald Christensen, Ron Larson, and Maynard Nielsen. Casket bearers were Allan Nissen, Tom Hansen, Evan Hansen, Todd Hansen, Jim Hansen, and Nichelle Hansen. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Kimballton, Iowa.
