Larry Joseph Koester, the son of Alvin Rudolph and Jacqueline (Hastert) Koester, was born on August 8, 1958, in Omaha, Nebraska. He moved to Panama, Iowa, with his family when he was nine years old, and he attended St. Mary’s School in Panama. Larry was a 1976 graduate of Harlan (Iowa) High School. From 1980-90, he drove a van for CDS in Harlan. On May 1, 1984, Larry married Janet Kathryn Finken in Harlan. In 1988, he moved to Westphalia, Iowa, and in 1998, he began working for Oakland Foods. In 2012, Larry moved to Harlan.
Larry was a Catholic. In addition to camping, he enjoyed spending time working on cars and various handyman projects.
Larry J. Koester died on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 54 years, 3 months, and 23 days. He was a tissue donor through the Iowa Donor Network.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Janet Koester of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Tony Koester of Harlan, Iowa; two daughters, Paula Koester of Harlan, Iowa, and Sarah Koester (special friend, Shawn Mosher) of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Mona (Randy) Schwarte of Westphalia, Iowa; one brother, Frank Koester of Panama, Iowa; one grandson, Bryan Mosher of Omaha, Nebraska; and other relatives and friends.
A prayer service was held on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Father John Frost of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Harlan, Iowa, officiating.
