LaJune Fay Johannsen, daughter of Ommo and Marcella (Riessen) Friedrichsen, was born on February 7, 1935, in rural Schleswig, Iowa. She was raised in rural Schleswig, and was baptized and confirmed in the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. On April 22, 1951, LaJune married Roger Wilbert Johannsen in Schleswig. She helped on the family farm, and assisted Roger with his commodity brokerage firm in Denison and Mapleton, Iowa. The couple later moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she worked at Bluffs Run Casino. They retired to Audubon, Iowa, where they lived for the last 18 years.
LaJune was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon. She enjoyed being a grandmother, going to the casinos, and watching some of the old detective shows on television. LaJune also continued to follow the commodities markets.
LaJune F. Johannsen died on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa, having reached the age of 79 years and 10 months.
LaJune was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger W. Johannsen, on October 21, 2013; one infant daughter, Susan Johannsen; two sons, Len Johannsen (in infancy) and Keith Johannsen; and one brother, Norman Friedrichsen. She is survived by three sons, Russ (Lori) Johannsen of Schleswig, Iowa, Jay Johannsen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Dr. Lee (Gianna) Johannsen of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Sherry (Joel) Porsch of Kimballton, Iowa; two brothers, Eugene (Marla) Friedrichsen of Carroll, Iowa, and Virgene (Wanita) Friedrichsen of Odebolt, Iowa; one sister, Jody (Veryl) Aschinger of Wall Lake, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, December 11, 2014, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon, Iowa, with Father Emmanuel Agwuoke serving as the celebrant. Gary Keller, Ashley Porsch, and Rosemary Williamson were the musicians. Serving as casket bearers were Joel Porsch, Jay Johannsen, Lee Johannsen, Russ Johannsen, Virgene Friedrichsen, and Eugene Friedrichsen. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Audubon, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements, with Hockenberry-England Funeral Home, Audubon, Iowa, assisting.
