James Lee “Jim” Jensen, the son of Einer O. and Leanna M. (Jacobsen) Jensen, was born on November 5, 1935, in rural Audubon, Iowa. He attended Rabbit Hollow Country School, and graduated from Elk Horn (Iowa) High School in 1954. While in high school, Jim played baseball. Following high school, he went to Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for one year; he also played baseball there. Jim participated in the St. Louis Cardinals training camp before returning home to farm.
On December 23, 1959, Jim married Jane Lavonne Graves at Altamont Baptist Church, rural Shelby County, Iowa. The couple first dairy farmed with Jim’s father south of Elk Horn, and in 1967, moved to the Graves Century Farm located west of Jacksonville, Iowa; he farmed this land until his death.
Jim was a member of First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, where he was a Deacon. He was a Veteran, having served as a member of the National Guard from 1958-1964. Jim enjoyed camping, carpentry, and doing electrical work. Serving his family, church, and community was very important to Jim.
Jim L. Jensen died on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He had reached the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 5 days.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Floyd Jensen and Kenneth Jensen. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane Jensen of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Janeen (Stan) Marean of Omaha, Nebraska; two sons, Jerry (Joyce) Jensen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and John (Joyce) Jensen of Galena, Missouri; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Saturday, March 14, 2020, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Dan Hawn of First Baptist Church, Harlan, Iowa, officiating. Barb Golike and Dave Riley served as the musicians. Casket bearers were Jeff Ward, Stan Marean, John Jensen, Jerry Jensen, Jennifer Balson, Deanna Jensen, Joshua Balson, and Jon Hansen. Burial was in the Bowman’s Grove Cemetery, rural Shelby County, Iowa, where graveside military rites were conducted by the Camp Dodge Honor Guard of Des Moines, Iowa.
