Harriett Jane Roos, the daughter of Henry and Jessie (Post) Zigtema, was born on July 16, 1929, in Cherokee, Iowa. She grew up and graduated from Orange City (Iowa) High School in 1947. For a time, she cared for her brother, Sam, an injured veteran. On April 6, 1950, Harriett married Eddie Dean Roos at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in Orange City until Eddie was called into military service in 1952, and they moved to Augusta, Georgia. They moved to Harlan, Iowa, in 1956. Beginning in 1984, Harriett and Eddie lived in Tyler, Texas; they returned to Harlan in 1994.
Harriett was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan. She had also been active in the American Legion Auxiliary, and served as the group’s president during 1958-59. Harriett truly enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking and caring for her children and husband. She later taught Eddie her cooking and homemaking tips. She liked to spend time reading mysteries, playing bridge, dancing, and going to garage sales.
Harriett J. Roos died on Friday, September 20, 2013, at her home in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 4 days.
Harriett was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and four sisters. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Eddie Roos of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Tom Roos of Seattle, Washington; two daughters, Jane (Wayne) Blackwell of Mount Pleasant, Texas, and Beth (Brad) Lunt of Bountiful, Utah; one brother, Raymond Zigtema of Tyler, Texas; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Ewert of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Harlan, Iowa, officiating. Janet Leader served as the organist and Ron Moon was the soloist. Casket bearers were Mark Garrett, Larry Wunder, Vern Holtmyer, Bud Vogelzang, Dave Rozeboom, Arnie VandeVegte, and Ron Mosher. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa.
