Grace Louella King was born on March 9, 1918, in Manilla, Crawford County, Iowa, to Alvin W. and Tillie G. (Wigg) Cadwell. Grace was educated and graduated from the Manilla School in 1936. She worked at different occupations until 1941, when she married Patrick Wolff. Two children were born to this union, Grace Marie (October 31, 1942 – October 19, 1956) and Lawrence Alvin (August 8, 1950 – August, 1950). From then on, she was employed in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
On November 14, 1981, Grace married Stephen Austin King. They resided in Council Bluffs until 1986, when they moved to Tennant, Iowa. In 1990, they moved to Defiance, Iowa. Stephen died in June, 1991.
Grace L. King died on Thursday, November 11, 2004, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 86 years, 8 months, and 2 days.
Grace is survived by one sister and her husband, Alma and Chris Yager of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Edith Cadwell of Des Moines, Iowa; one step-daughter, Mary Alice Boudreau of Missouri Valley, Iowa; four step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends. Besides her husband Stephen, Grace is preceded in death by two half-sisters and their husbands, Frank E. and Maud E. Ward, and Leslie and Maurine Willson; one half-brother and his wife, Willis S. and Anna Cadwell; two sisters, Mabel and her husband, Guy Miller, and Erma, in infancy; five brothers, Lloyd and his wife, Margaret Cadwell, Vernon A. Cadwell, and Judson, Roy, and Ray Cadwell, all in infancy; and one stepson, C.J. (Jimmy) King.
A private graveside service was held on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at the Union Township Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa, with Seth C. Johannsen officiating. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.
