Gerald “Jerry” Lee McCreary, the son of Clarence and Nellie (Wilson) McCreary, was born on December 12, 1950, in East St. Louis, Illinois. He attended school in Corydon, Iowa, through the tenth grade before entering the United States Air Force. Jerry served active duty as a Staff Sergeant (E5) in Vietnam; he proudly served his country for eight years.
On March 3, 1973, Jerry married Beverly Jean Geerdes in Bloomfield, Illinois. Following his Honorable Discharge from the Service, he began trucking. Jerry spent many hours doing long-haul work, and enjoyed the “alone time” on the road. Due to disability, he later had to retire from trucking.
At the age of ten, Jerry received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and was baptized in the Baptist church. He loved to spend time hunting and fishing with friends.
Gerald “Jerry” L. McCreary died on Sunday, May 17, 2020, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. He had reached the age of 69 years, 5 months, and 5 days.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beverly McCreary of Harlan, Iowa; two daughters, Rebekah Mether and Elizabeth (Jay) Harrison, both of Missouri Valley, Iowa; two sons, Bill (Susie) McCreary of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Bobby McCreary of Harlan, Iowa; four grandchildren; and other friends and relatives.
The funeral service was held on Friday, May 22, 2020, at the Harvest of Hope Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Troy Renter officiating. Rebekah Mether and Elizabeth Harrison served as the musicians. Casket bearers were members of the Shelby County VFW Post #941 and the Helmer-Reyelt American Legion Post #150. Military rites were conducted by the Shelby County VFW Post #941 and the Helmer-Reyelt American Legion Post #150, and burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa.
