Georgene Elizabeth Peters, the daughter of Dillman (DE) and Bertha (Truhlar) Benton, was born on August 31, 1914, in Westside, Iowa. She spent most of her childhood in Westside, Iowa, and attended the Westside School. During her school years, Georgene enjoyed participating in basketball.

Georgene married Max Berman and they lived in Colorado, Arizona, and Sioux City, Iowa. Max was a cattle buyer. He passed away in 1946.

On January 14, 1947, Georgene married Lester Louis Peters at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa. To this union two sons, Greg and Kurt, were born. In 1947, Les and Georgene moved to Harlan, Iowa, and operated Case Machinery and Auto. Church was important to Georgene; she spent many years teaching Confirmation classes. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, and had served in many positions within the congregation.

Georgene E. Peters died on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at her son’s home in Roanoke, Texas, at the age of 96 years, 11 months, and 16 days.

Preceding Georgene in death were her parents; her first husband, Max Berman; her second husband, Lester Peters; one sister, Pearl Lenz; three brothers, Rocky Benton, Bud Benton, and Mike Benton; and an infant son, Royal Berman. Survivors include two sons, Kurt Peters and Greg (Julie) Peters, all of Roanoke, Texas; her sister, Verna Frank of Carroll, Iowa; three grandchildren, Amber (Craig) Moore of Harlan, Iowa, Royal (Chelle) Jai of Lancaster, California, and Chase Peters of Roanoke, Texas; six great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as the organist, and Diane Kastens was the soloist. Burial was in the Westside Cemetery in Westside, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
