Gaylord worked at various jobs, including delivering milk to the Shelby County area, and working as a clerk at a grocery store following a move to California. He returned to Harlan, and on November 19, 1938, he married Aletha Mae Johnson in Rockport, Missouri. Six children were born to this union.
After their marriage, the couple lived in Shannon City, Iowa, Cromwell, Iowa, and later Manilla, Iowa, where they farmed for seven years. They then moved to Charter Oak, Iowa, where Gaylord worked for the MoorMan’s Feed Company as a salesman for a short time. Gaylord and Aletha returned to Harlan, and in 1950, he joined the Harlan police department; he remained in this position until 1979 when he retired. He and Aletha were also distributors for the Omaha World Herald Newspaper from 1951-1978.
Following Aletha’s death on March 15, 1993, Gaylord continued to live in Harlan. In 2002, Gaylord moved to Henderson, Nevada, where he lived in a Senior Apartment complex until he became a resident of an Assisted Living Home in Las Vegas in 2009.
