Frank Henry Lesch, the son of Edward B. and Louise (Harris) Lesch, was born on November 15, 1927. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Omaha, and attended Omaha Public Schools. In the late 1940s, Frank moved to Waterloo, Nebraska, where he served as a member of the Waterloo Volunteer Fire Department for twelve years. On November 20, 1954, Frank married Mildred Louise Miles in Waterloo, where they operated their truck farm. In 1968, the couple moved to an acreage located south of Shelby, Iowa, where they had a large garden. Frank also worked at the Omaha Stockyards during the winter for fifteen years, and at Oakland Foods, Oakland, Iowa, for ten years. Frank and Mildred moved into Shelby in 1991.
Frank was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. Family was very important to him, and he enjoyed babysitting the grandkids and taking them fishing. Frank had a green thumb, was a man of good humor and was a Big Red fan. He enjoyed traveling with Millie and his family; he also enjoyed camping.
Frank H. Lesch died on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, having reached the age of 85 years and 2 months.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Edward Lesch; and two sisters, Susan Sudduth and Lucille Gausden. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Lesch of Shelby, Iowa; two sons, Frank (Pamala) Lesch and Mitchell Lesch, all of Shelby, Iowa; one sister, Jean Leonardo of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Friday, January 18, 2013, at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Duane Anunson officiating. Marian Eckmann served as the organist and Bonnie Peters was the soloist. Casket bearers were Martin Lesch, Adam Pieken, Joshua Lesch, Jordan Lesch, Robert Sudduth, and James Leonardo. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
