F. MacGregor Miller, son of Richard and Jean (MacGregor) Miller, was born on April 13, 1937 in Milwaukee, WI.

Greg was baptized and confirmed at St. Rose Catholic Church, and attended Winslow Elementary and Franklin Junior High Schools, all in Racine, WI. In 1955, he graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, MA. After one year at Yale University, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Heidelberg, Germany as a member of the 33rd Army Band. In 1960, he married Ann-Marie Andersson of Halmstad, Sweden. Following honorable military discharge, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with high honors in Chemistry in 1962.

The Millers moved to Seattle where, in 1968, Greg completed his Ph.D. degree in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Washington. After his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California, he joined Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company in Chicago, where he served as a Research Chemist. He then served the Portland Cement Association in Skokie, IL as Senior Research Chemist and Process Development Manager.

In 1978, Dr. Miller and his young family moved to Scandinavia, where he worked for F.L. Smidth & Co., in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1981, he returned to the United States, first as Process Operations Director, then as Director of Research for Ideal Cement.

Dr. Miller held many positions in the Cement Industry: Director of Technical Affairs, Vice President and General Manager of the New Mexico division of Ideal Cement; Director of Business Development, and Director of Technical Services, where he was acclaimed for his development of new uses for waste fuels and substitute raw materials.

During his career, he authored and published a myriad of award- winning technical and scientific papers for the cement industry.

He earned an international reputation for his presentations at worldwide cement industry conferences, alongside his problem-solving consulting services to cement manufacturers on six continents. Greg taught technical courses at countless cement plants as well as the Colorado School of Mines. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society for Testing and Materials, and the Air and Waste Management Association.

In 2003, he retired from Cement Technology Laboratories (CTL) in Skokie, IL. He and his wife, Janet, moved to Colorado where he established his own consulting business, Cement Etc. Inc., from which he retired in 2013.

Greg and Janet met in a Divorce Recovery Class in Fort Collins, CO. They were married on May 4, 1984. He was kind and generous to all who knew him, and was very supportive of Janet’s call to study for pastoral ministry. He loved the LORD and loved being a pastor’s spouse. He researched, wrote, and taught adult Sunday School courses, sang in church choirs, and played his Alto Sax, Clarinet, Jazz Piano, and Ukulele at worship services, at annual gatherings of the 33rd Army Band, and at countless social gatherings and family reunions. During the recent years in Denver, he sang with the Denver Lutheran Chorale, and the Denver Mountaineers, a Barbershop Chorus.

Greg died at his home in Harlan, IA on April 20th and is laid to rest at the Crawford Heights Memorial Garden in Denison, IA.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; two daughters: Susan (ÅKe) Pettersson-Miller of Lund, Sweden and Ellen (William) Boesewetter of Fort Worth, TX; two sisters: Linda (Michael) Warren of Seattle, WA and Martha Miller of Chicago, IL; a nephew, Joseph (Michelle) Warren of East Elmhurst, NY; niece: Deborah (Jesse) Collins of Seattle, WA; three grandsons; and eight step-grandchildren by three stepchildren: Henry (Francine) Kuhn of Ewa Beach, HI, Richard (Deborah) Kuhn of Littleton, CO, and Laura (Scott) Mullins of Mequon, WI.

The Service of Thanksgiving for Greg’s life was held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Phil Nielsen officiating. Barbara Smith served as the organist and Pastor Keith Menter was the soloist. Lectors were Henry Kuhn, Richard Kuhn, and Laura Mullins. Craig Olson served as reader. Burial was held on Tuesday, April 21. 2015, at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Lutherans for Life.
