Errol Jon Carstensen, the son of Elmer Johnsen and Liela Ramona (Juel) Carstensen, was born on July 28, 1941, in Elk Horn, Iowa. His family moved to Shelby, Iowa, in 1947, and Jon attended Shelby Community Schools, graduating in 1959. He entered the United States Navy and served on a destroyer until he received a medical discharge. Jon then worked at the Shelby Bank before starting business school in Omaha, Nebraska. He went on to attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he majored in business.
Jon married Ruby Raelene “Rae” Shelley on May 9, 1965, in Omaha. In 1970, they made their home in Shelby. For several years, he worked for a marketing company in Omaha. Jon then worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail processor for many years.
Jon was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shelby, and the Shelby American Legion Post #240. His hobbies included fishing and golfing, and he enjoyed old Westerns, morning coffee, and TV shows like Matlock and Blue Bloods.
Errol Jon Carstensen died on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 74 years and 11 days.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, and two grandchildren, Ethan Carstensen and Ean Carstensen. He is survived by his wife, Rae Carstensen of Shelby, Iowa; two sons, Eric (Ellen) Carstensen of Omaha, Nebraska, and Eron (Sarah) Carstensen of Kansas City, Kansas; one sister, Sondra Kitchens of Jackson, Mississippi; three grandchildren, Jack Carstensen of Omaha, Nebraska, and Savannah Carstensen and Eli Carstensen, both of Kansas City, Kansas; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen of United Lutheran Church, Shelby, officiating. Georgene Juhl, Deb Rosenow, Sandy Wilds, and Kathy Schumacher served as the musicians. Casket bearers were members of the Shelby American Legion Post #240. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the Shelby American Legion Post #240.
