Eddie Dean Roos, the son of Edward and Esther (Hyink) Roos, was born on April 4, 1929, in Alton, Iowa. On April 6, 1950, Eddie married Harriett Jane Zigtema at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived in Orange City, Iowa, where Eddie worked as a lineman for a power company. From 1952-54, they lived in Augusta, Georgia, while Eddie served in the United States Army. In 1956, they moved to Harlan, Iowa. In 1984, following a job-related injury, Eddie and Harriett moved to Whitehouse, Texas, where they resided until returning to Harlan in 1994.
Eddie was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. He was a member and active supporter of both the Helmer-Reyelt AL Post #150, and the Shelby County VFW Post #941. He had the honor of serving as both the Commander and the Sergeant-at-Arms for the American Legion post, and had been awarded a 60-year American Legion pin. Eddie was also honored to have been named a Harlan Citizen of the Years.
Eddie was a past Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, as well as a Red Cross First Aid instructor. He enjoyed helping others and meeting new friends when he sold and serviced Kirby vacuum cleaners. Eddie like to spend time outdoors, hunting, fishing, and golfing, and he especially loved taking Harriett dancing.
Eddie D. Roos died on Thursday, May 7, 2015, at his home in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 3 days.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriett, on September 20, 2013; two sisters, Joyce Roos and Ethel Roos; and two brothers, Donald Roos and an infant brother. He is survived by one son, Tom Roos of Seattle, Washington; two daughters, Jane (Wayne) Blackwell of Mount Pleasant, Texas, and Beth (Brad) Lunt of Bountiful, Utah; one brother, LeRoy Roos of Virginia, Minnesota; three sisters, Ethel Hall of Stewartville, Minnesota, Betty Hellickson of Preston, Minnesota, and Ruby (Ken) Bushman of Roscoe, Minnesota; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Ewert officiating. Janet Leader served as the organist and Ron Moon was the soloist. Casket bearers were Mike Mumm, Randy Roghair, Bud Vogelzang, Dave Rozeboom, Randy Nowatzke, and Allen “Punk” Bruck. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa, with military rites performed by the Shelby County VFW Post #941 and Helmer-Reyelt AL Post #150.
