Dorothy Emmaline Chipman, the daughter of Henry Edward and Helen Margaret (Hipner) Noehren, was born on June 23, 1919, in Oakland, Iowa. She graduated from Harlan (Iowa) High School, and on September 11, 1938, married Russell Elliott Chipman at the Methodist Church in Harlan. The couple farmed several locations in the Harlan and Kirkman, Iowa, areas. In 1950, they settled on land located on Road M16, southwest of Harlan; Dorothy helped Russell raise hogs, cattle, and grain. In 1979, Russell and Dorothy retired and moved into Harlan, where they lived until Russell’s death on February 26, 2000; Dorothy remained in their home for the remainder of her life.
Dorothy was a longtime active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, and she made it a point to attend worship services whenever possible. She was a good dancer, and she and Russell enjoyed many dances. Dorothy liked to play Bridge, and she greatly enjoyed the fellowship and fun of playing cards and visiting with her friends. She was a fantastic cook and baker, and fixing meals for her family and friends brought her much happiness. Dorothy also enjoyed doing handiwork and made many quilts.
Dorothy E. Chipman died on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at her home in Harlan, Iowa. She had reached the age of 95 years, 7 months, and 12 days.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell Chipman; one infant daughter, Sandra Kay Chipman; one infant great-grandson, Ethan Chipman; four brothers, Edward Noehren, Henry Noehren, Robert Noehren, and Donald Noehren; and one sister, Margaret Pauley. She is survived by one son, Rick (Cheryl) Chipman of Harlan, Iowa; two daughters, Peg Booth of Carlsbad, California, and Pat Chipman of Harlan, Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Phillip Nielsen officiating. Serving as casket bearers were Chris Booth, Michelle Lane, Adam Chipman, Jerad Chipman, Amanda Chipman, and Emily Concordia. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Immanuel Lutheran Church Tanzania Missions.
