Doris R. Shannon

d. April 9, 2007

Doris R. Shannon, daughter of Jack and Hannah (Parks) Wailes, was born February 15, 1922, at Bayard, Iowa. She later moved with her family to Manning, Iowa, where she attended school in Manning and graduated in 1939 from Manning High School.

On December 1, 1940, Doris was united in marriage to Ellsworth Shannon at the Methodist Church in Manning. After their marriage, they lived in Kirkman for two years while Ellsworth farmed in the area. After a few years, they moved to their present home near Kirkman where they have lived for 64 years and raised three children.

During her life as a devoted mother and wife, she enjoyed cooking and sewing. She faithfully attended the Kirkman United Methodist Church and was a long-time member of Willing Workers, which later became the United Methodist Women (UMW).

When her children were school-age, she began working as an Avon representative and enjoyed visiting with her many customers. She continued to sell Avon until her death.

Her favorite activities included shopping and spending time with friends and family. She and Ellsworth spent many enjoyable times with the LNO Club; Doris was both a charter and longtime member of the Club. Fun memories and jokes often came from LNO club gatherings. Doris’s life was one filled with countless wonderful people, experiences and memories.

Doris died at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs after a fairly brief illness at the age of 85 years, 1 month, and 25 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Dorothy and Esther; and two brothers, Robert and William. She is survived by her husband Ellsworth; three children, Pat (Norris) Olson of Manilla, Iowa, Nancy (Lynn) Douglas of Edina, Missouri, and Jack (Lori) Shannon of Manning, Iowa; three grandchildren, Gloria (Brett) Irlbeck of Manning, Mark (Mindy) Olson of Council Bluffs, and Shannon Meister of Council Bluffs; five great-grandchildren, Melissa, Michelle, and MaKayla Irlbeck of Manning, and Lauren and Nathan Olson of Council Bluffs. Also surviving are a sister, Nellie Hinners of Del Ray, Florida; a sister-in-law, LaVerne Wailes of Boone, Iowa; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
