Donald Glenn Roos, the son of Ed and Esther (Hyink) Roos, was born October 16, 1925, in Alton, Iowa. He attended Floyd School in Alton, Iowa. He went into the Army from 1944-1946 during WWII. On February 14, 1949, Donald and Bertha Jenetta Ter Meer married in Inwood, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Iowa and Minnesota. For many years, Don was a foster parent and worked as a hired man for Edgar Jensen in Eyota, Minnesota. Then he went to work for Pioneer Hybrid in Johnston, Iowa, in March 1967. He retired from Pioneer in 1986. Before Don’s retirement, Don and Bert lived in Spring Valley and Eyota, Minnesota, and Des Moines, Johnston, and Grimes, Iowa. After Don retired, Don and Bert moved to Bella Vista and Bentonville, Arkansas. Don worked the craft fairs for Verne Patton while they lived there from 1988 to December 2001. Then Don and Bert moved to Harlan, Iowa.
Donald was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed working outside at the craft fairs of putting up lights, directing traffic, and whatever else that needed to be done. He also enjoyed making wood crafts, having a garden, canning, mowing the lawn, and playing cards. He enjoyed sitting outside and completing word find puzzles. Don helped with making noodles for the Congregational United Church of Christ.
Donald G. Roos died at home in Harlan, Iowa, on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at the age of 88 years and 29 days.
Preceding Donald in death were his parents Ed and Esther Roos; two sisters, Joyce Roos and Ethel Roos; one stillborn brother; and his wife, Bert. Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Johnson of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Timothy (Pam) Roos of Taylor, Texas; two brothers, LeRoy (Dorla) Roos of Virginia, Minnesota, and Eddie Roos of Harlan, Iowa; three sisters, Ethel (Lyle) Hall of Stewartville, Minnesota, Betty Hellickson of Preston, Minnesota, and Ruby (Ken) Bushman of Roscoe, Minnesota; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
A local memorial service was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Ewert of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan officiating. An additional memorial service was held on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, Iowa. Burial of ashes was in the Richland Cemetery in Inwood, Iowa.
