Dewey Andrew Hess, son of Wilfred N. and Alta V. (Hansen) Hess, was born on September 7, 1938, in rural Jacksonville, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm 2½ miles south of Jacksonville, and attended Jackson #9 country school through the eighth grade. He graduated from Harlan (Iowa) High School with the Class of 1958. In 1965, Dewey began his 35-year career working for Harlan Municipal Utilities, where he worked primarily in the gas department; he retired in 2000.
On October 7, 1966, Dewey married Darlene Iona Bornholdt at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. The couple made their home in Harlan.
Dewey was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, and faithfully attended the Saturday evening worship service. As a young man, he enjoyed raising and showing 4-H sheep. Dewey liked toy tractors and was partial to John Deere. He always loved a good meal, especially when it was shared with his family. Dewey liked butterscotch candy and taking leisurely drives around Prairie Rose Lake in Shelby County.
Dewey A. Hess died on Friday, May 29, 2020, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. He had reached the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 22 days.
Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Duane Hess, Dennis Hess, and Dean Hess. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Darlene Hess of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Kevin (Lisa) Hess of Van Meter, Iowa; one daughter, Deanna (Bill) Specht of Sartell, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Carson Hess, Justin Hess, McKenzie Specht, and Tyler Specht; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Phillip Nielsen officiating. Casket bearers were Rick Hess, Jamie Hess, Doug Hess, Chad Hess, Randy Hess, Jason Hess, Larry Petersen, and Jamie Burmeister. Burial was in the Jacksonville Cemetery, Jacksonville, Iowa.
