Darlene Grace Arp, the daughter of Amiel and Hulda H. (Fries) Troll, was born on February 16, 1932, in Walnut, Iowa. She was raised in Walnut and attended Walnut country schools through the eighth grade. Darlene attended high school in Harlan, Iowa, and graduated from Harlan High School in 1949. On August 3, 1952, Darlene married Edwin B. Arp at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. For four years, Darlene worked for Nelson Motor Company and Greenbay Lumber Company, both of Harlan. The couple then moved to Shelby, Iowa, where they raised their family. Darlene was employed as a cook by the Shelby school system for 15 years; she also kept the books for the family TV business. She later worked as a resident counselor for REM Leadway-Shelby for several years. In recent years, Darlene had been a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa.
Darlene was a member of the Shelby United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, the American Legion Auxiliary #240, the Shelby Garden Club, and the Friendship Club. She was a Charter Queen member of the Red Hat Society, Shelby. Darlene loved raising flowers, and enjoyed spending time playing cards, dancing, camping, and fishing.
Darlene Grace Arp died on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 8 days. Darlene donated her body to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin B. Arp, on July 16, 1993; two brothers, Wilfred Troll and Alvin Troll; and three sisters, Gertrude Jacobsen, Alverta Hansen and Leora Kirk. She is survived by two daughters, Debra (Roger) Grant of Millard, Nebraska, and Sharon (Terry) Weis of Treynor, Iowa; one son, Bruce Arp (Julie Wade) of Avoca, Iowa; three sisters, Dorothy Randeris of Audubon, Iowa, Ruth (Elmer) Heimerman of Boone, Iowa, Nancy Blum of Anoka, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Ruth Troll of Walnut, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, with Rev. Paul M. Reynolds, Chaplain of Salem Lutheran Home, Elk Horn, Iowa, officiating. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
