Dale Andrew Sorensen

Dale Andrew Sorensen, the son of Hans and Edith (Madson) Sorensen, was born on July 30, 1928, in rural Guthrie Center, Iowa. After graduating from Guthrie Center High School in 1946, he worked as a hired hand for a number of years. On August 7, 1952, Dale married Wilma Mae Harris at the Redline Church of Christ, rural Shelby County, Iowa. The couple moved to Harlan, Iowa, in 1954, where Dale began working as the sexton of the Harlan Cemetery. He continued in this position until 1975, when he began doing contract digging and working for the Harlan Monument Company. In 1986, Dale and Wilma began spending winters in Arkansas; they moved to Shirley, Arkansas, in 1989. They had recently returned to Harlan, and Dale became a resident of the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa, in November 2010.

Dale was a member of the Church of Christ in Shirley, Arkansas. He enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of North America. Dale loved old cars, and his 1939 Chevy Coupe pickup was very special to him.

Dale A. Sorensen died on Monday, January 31, 2011, at the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa, at the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 1 day.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Gailord Long; two brothers, Merlin Sorensen and Jerry Sorensen; and one sister, Donna Parker. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Wilma Sorensen of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Donald (Dee) Sorensen of Harlan, Iowa; one sister, Norma (Thomas) McMichael of Audubon, Iowa; one brother, Arnold Sorensen of Manson, Iowa; four grandchildren, Sterling Sorensen, Shantelle Sorensen, Andrew Sorensen, and Jacob Sorensen, all of Harlan, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

A graveside service was held on Friday, February 4, 2011, at the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Roy North of the Harlan Church of Christ officiating. Casket bearers were Mark Garret, Martin Hansen, Jacob Sorensen, Andrew Sorensen, Sterling Sorensen, and Shantelle Sorensen.
