Charles LeRoy “Chuck” Bergstrom was born on January 3, 1930, in Stafford, Nebraska, to Nils Amos and Esther Alta (Schober) Bergstrom. He attended rural schools until his family moved to Ewing, Nebraska, where he graduated from Ewing Public Schools in 1948. Charles was a member of the Boy Scouts in Ewing, and was on the football and basketball teams in high school.
After graduation, Charles worked in road construction until January 1951, when he enlisted in the Army. He trained as a tank mechanic and served in the 73rd Tank Battalion in South Korea and with the Armored School in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He received his discharge in March 1954, having attained the rank of sergeant.
Following his discharge, Charles returned to road work before attending Norfolk Junior College, Norfolk, Nebraska, where he received an Associate in Arts degree in May 1956. On August 24, 1956, he married Evelyn Ann Thompson at the First Congregational Church in Wisner, Nebraska. Charles attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Nebraska, and Wayne State Teachers College, Wayne, Nebraska; he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in May 1959. From 1959-1962, he taught mathematics/science in the Cumberland-Massena (Iowa) School District. In 1962, the couple moved to Harlan, Iowa, where Charles taught high school mathematics until his retirement in 1992. He also taught Trigonometry and Calculus for Iowa Western Community College. During his summers from 1968-1970, Charles attended Colorado State University, Greeley, Colorado, and received his Masters Degree in 1970.
A past member of the Masonic Lodge in Wisner, Nebraska, Charles was also a member of the Lions Clubs in Cumberland, Iowa, and Harlan, Iowa, for a number of years. He and Evelyn were members of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa, where Charles had served as a member of the Trustees. His hobbies included traveling, photography, remodeling his home in Harlan, and feeding the birds. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives and friends; they also enjoyed visiting national parks and area state parks, observing the many beauties of God’s creation.
Charles L. “Chuck” Bergstrom died on Thursday, October 22, 2015, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 19 days.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn, on April 1, 2015; infant daughter, Denise Lee; and two sisters, Mary Lou Rebmann and Joyce Louise Wagner. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Robinson of Irwin, Iowa, and Laurel (Tim) Burger of Harlan, Iowa; three grandsons, Jason (Kaitlyn) Burger and their daughter, Lillian, of Harlan, Iowa, Jesse (Brianne “Bri”) Burger of Omaha, Nebraska, and Christian Robinson of Irwin, Iowa; one granddaughter, Jaedyn Robinson of Irwin, Iowa; one sister, Lois (Carl) Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Monday, October 26, 2015, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Ewert officiating. Jim Thompson served as the organist. Honorary casket bearers were Ken Sprague, Herb Lang, Everette Carroll, and John Gilliland. Active bearers were Jason Burger, Jesse Burger, Josh Pedersen, Todd Johnson, Jaedyn Robinson, and Christian Robinson. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa, with military rites conducted by VFW Post #941 and Helmer Reyelt AL Post #150, Harlan.
