Betty Ruth Krohn, the daughter of H. Chris and Johannah (Jensen) Nielsen, was born on April 28, 1927, in Underwood, Iowa. She graduated from Underwood High School in 1944, and worked for several years at Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. On April 15, 1949, Betty married Robert Marion Krohn in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple lived in the area of McClelland, Iowa, and then settled in the Shelby, Iowa, area in 1960. Betty and Robert farmed for many years before moving into Shelby in 1979. Betty worked as a residential counselor for the mentally handicapped residents at REM-Leadway from 1974-1988.
Betty had a great sense of humor, was a good cook and liked to play cards. She enjoyed spending time with her family and often saved newspaper clippings about her children and grandchildren. She especially liked attending her grandchildren’s school activities. She will always be remembered for her unselfish and caring nature.
Betty R. Krohn died on Monday, June 3, 2013, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 6 days.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, on July 27, 1995; one grandson, David Lewis Krohn; two sisters, Dorothy and Joyce; and three brothers, Chris, Eldon “Dane”, and Orville “Cotton”. She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (David) Peters of Shelby, Iowa; three sons, Bob Krohn of Davenport, Iowa, Jerry (Frieda) Krohn of Goode, Virginia, and Mike (Julie) Krohn of Ankeny, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Nielsen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Emmy Krohn of Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Friday, June 7, 2013, at United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Nancy Armstrong served as the organist. Casket bearers were Bobby Krohn, Andy Krohn, Mike Krohn, Jr., Josh Krohn, Jake Krohn, and Darin Peters. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.
