Betty Jane Wede-Berg, the daughter of Joseph Orson and Wylma Fern (Graybill) Champlin, was born on December 20, 1932, in Persia, Iowa. She graduated from Persia High School in 1951, and on July 29, 1951, married William O. Wede at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. The couple became the parents of one son and two daughters. They farmed in the Neola, Iowa, area until William’s death on January 15, 1995, in Omaha, Nebraska.
On May 10, 1997, Betty married Kenneth Berg at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby. Along with Kenneth, Betty continued to manage the farm. She was an active farmer for 32 years before she retired.
Betty was an active confirmed member of the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, where she served on the church council, the Altar Guild, the Women of the Church, and the Sewing Circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #240. An organized, generous, and thoughtful person, Betty took great pride in farm work well done. She liked to sew, and made clothing for her family, as well as quilts for all her family members. Betty really enjoyed country and Gospel music, and liked to attend country music jam sessions, especially the “picking and grinning” held at the Corn Crib Restaurant on Friday evenings.
Betty J. Wede-Berg died on Thursday, August 20, 2015, at her Shelby, Iowa, home. She had reached the age of 82 years and 8 months.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, William O. Wede; a twin sister, Bonnie Perrin; and one daughter, Connie Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Berg of Shelby, Iowa; one son, Ronald Wede of Oakland, Iowa; one daughter, Donna Wede (friend, Jeff Wickersham) of Cedar Falls, Iowa; one stepson, Ronald (Sheri) Berg of Kalamazoo, Michigan; one son-in-law, Gary Johnson of Brayton, Iowa; one brother, William (Rosemary) Champlin of Ontario, California; three brothers-in-law, Alfred (Gen) Wede of Atlantic, Iowa, Donald Berg of Ramona, California, and Melvin Berg of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Audrie Wede of Audubon, Iowa, and Carolyn Epp of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren, Joseph Wede, Katie Johnson, and Jacob Johnson; three step-grandchildren, Dean Berg, Alexis Berg, and Audrey Berg; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Monday, August 24, 2015, at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Nancy Armstrong served as the organist, and Bonnie Peters was the soloist. Casket bearers were Scott Wede, Lisa Powell, Gene Perrin, Jeff Shreeves, Nancy Templeman, and Ernest Wede, Jr. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
