Anna “Anne” Gustava Miller, the daughter of Andrew and Dora (Hill) Olsen, was born on November 14, 1907, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was raised in Council Bluffs and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. She attended one year of college in Kansas. Anne then worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. On May 30, 1936, Anne married Furman M. Miller at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. In 1949, the couple moved to Harlan, Iowa, where they opened the Miller Insurance Agency. They ran the business until the mid-1970’s.
Anne was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and loved playing Bridge. Anne also was a strong supporter of the Harlan Community Library.
Anne Miller died on Sunday, February 11, 2007, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 99 years, 2 months, and 28 days.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Furman, on August 19, 1993; one brother Torval Olsen; and two sisters, Edna Olsen and Gertrude Devine. She is survived by two sons, John (Jane) Miller of Nashville, Tennessee, and Todd (Debra) Miller of Santa Fe, New Mexico; three grandchildren, Anne Drue Anderson of Ojai, California, Matthew Miller of Dallas, Texas, and Tyler Miller of Nashville, Tennessee; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Burial of ashes will take place at a later date in the Walnut Hills Cemetery in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Harlan Community Library in Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.
